The SVP of Lower Valais wants to file a lawsuit after a crossword puzzle published in the newspaper “Le Nouvelliste” in which, among other things, the party was described as racist.

The lawsuit is against the umbrella organization of Valais artists, Visarte. On the occasion of Visarte’s 50th anniversary, the newspaper collaborated with the association as part of an artistic partnership.

In the crossword puzzle of “Le Nouvelliste” of November 18, the three-letter search was for a “Swiss, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-feminist, anti-ecological, anti-poor and nationalist party”. The correct answer was UDC (SVP).

SVP is “appalled”

The party found this defamatory and expressed “dismay” about the message in a press release. The newspaper “Le Nouvelliste” subsequently apologized to the party. But this is not enough for him.

SVP MP Alexandre Cipolla said in an interview with local radio Rhône FM on Thursday: “Art can have a political dimension, but it must remain within the boundaries of what is sensible. It is our duty to defend a part of the population that feels attacked, even slandered and slandered.”

Canton needs to cut funding for artists

The affair also has political consequences. The SVP Lower Valais has submitted a postulate to the Grand Council. “We attack Visarte because it receives public funds that, among other things, serve to subsidize the work of this artist, and we believe that these funds could be used for other purposes,” Cipolla said.

One of the curators of the 50th anniversary of Visarte Wallis defended himself on the radio: “It is absolutely not defamatory, people are used to calling the child by his name, at least in my area,” he explained. And the SVP was convicted of racism, he continued. (SDA)
