Asylum seekers will live on the site of the current Buosingen campsite in the future.

According to a statement from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Wednesday, the planning and implementation of the center on the site of the current Buosingen campsite is likely to take at least six years.

The purchase of the site was possible because the owners stopped camping activities.

The SEM originally wanted to build a federal asylum center with 340 places in Wintersried in the municipality of Schwyz, but these plans met with bitter resistance. This location is now off the table. In the Asylum Sector Plan, the Wintersried location must be replaced by Buosingen, the SEM announced.

Center for rejected asylum seekers

In the sectoral planning process, federal offices, the canton, as well as the municipality and the population can comment on the location, according to the SEM. The plan approval process also includes a public review in the local community. The people’s right to participate and the right to complain would be guaranteed.

Asylum seekers who are rejected will live in the planned center. The asylum region of Central Switzerland/Ticino must make a total of 340 such places available to the federal government. Because the planned Buosingen center in Arth will only have 170 places, a second center is necessary. The SEM announced that a possible location in another central Swiss canton is being investigated.

The planned center will be managed by the federal government. However, the community of Goldau and the canton of Schwyz will receive fewer refugees as compensation. The municipality of Arth will hardly have to accept more asylum seekers in years with average asylum numbers, the statement said. (SDA)
