The trial of former Gambian Interior Minister Ousman Sonko has begun at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona. The federal prosecutor’s office accuses him of crimes against humanity.

As part of the preliminary questions, Sonko’s lawyer stated that Swiss criminal law did not apply to a significant part of the charges. Furthermore, acts committed before January 1, 2011 – when crimes against humanity came into effect in Switzerland – could not be prosecuted due to the ban on retroactivity.

Lawyer criticizes procedure

The lawyer also listed numerous steps in the process where mistakes were made or his client’s rights were violated. Respondents in Gambia were not informed of their right to consult a lawyer.

The BA accuses the suspect of committing numerous crimes between 2000 and 2016, mainly in collaboration with other management members. (SDA)
