The military’s deployment to protect the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR has begun. The majority of the more than 5,000 soldiers were deployed on Monday. The WEF starts next Monday.
Parliament set the upper limit of a maximum of 5,000 army personnel when it approved the deployment of the army. Some of those summoned will be deployed during the five-day meeting in the Landwassertal, the Ministry of Defense announced on Monday.
Army members are also deployed for the WEF in the rest of Switzerland, for example to maintain air sovereignty, logistics and leadership support. The civil authorities of the canton of Graubünden are responsible for the army operation.
The military is responsible for air sovereignty. The air force strengthens the air police service and carries out surveillance flights for the benefit of the canton of Graubünden and the air transport of persons protected by international law. The Air Force works closely with partners from Austria and Italy to ensure the safety of the airspace.
Restrictions in the airspace above Davos apply on Fridays and from Saturday to Saturday in a week. Special rules apply to arrivals and departures at regional airports and heliports and permission is required for flights.
Parliament approved 2.55 million francs each for the deployment of the military during the WEF’s annual meetings in 2022, 2023 and 2024. This is less than previous years because the WEF Foundation contributes more to these costs than before.
It is expected that many WEF guests will travel to Davos via Zurich Airport. According to a statement on Monday, the airport expects around 1,000 additional flight movements, approximately the same number as in previous years.
In addition to business jets and helicopter flights, state aircraft are also expected in Zurich. The airport lists the types Boeing 747-800, 747-900 and 777, as well as Airbus 330 and 340. For aviation fans and plane spotters, it offers extended opening hours on the viewing terrace in Terminal B and special guided tours. (SDA)
