Since the last elections, new transparency rules have come into force. Politicians, parties and associations must indicate what they spend on the election campaign.
The elected members of the Council of States had until January 4 to make public the final accounts of their election campaigns – provided they had spent a total of more than 50,000 francs on them.
The responsible Federal Audit Office (SFAO) has not yet published all the data. The SFAO wants all submitted data to be formally assessed and published within a week at the latest.
However, the “Aargauer Zeitung” already knows for sure who had the largest electoral box in the race for the Council of States. The final budgets of the most populous cantons have already been published. There are many posters to hang up and flyers to hand out explaining why the election campaign is significantly more expensive than in a canton with fewer inhabitants.
According to calculations by the “Aargauer Zeitung”, GLP state councilor Tiana Angelina Moser (44) could count on approximately 470,000 francs for the two ballots. This meant that the woman from Zurich had the largest budget. She did not respond to a request from Blick on Saturday.
FDP president Thierry Burkart (48) follows in second place with 341,200 francs. He was elected in the first round in the canton of Aargau. Burkart told the “Aargauer Zeitung” that he had spent only 180,000 francs. Save the rest for possible future elections and political projects.
In third place is the Vaud FDP state councilor Pascal Broulis (58) with 287,005 francs in the election campaign budget.
It is not entirely possible to verify whether Moser’s campaign was actually the most expensive in Switzerland. Because only elected candidates must make their budget public. For example, it is uncertain what SVP Council of States candidate Gregor Rutz (51), who was defeated by Moser, had in terms of campaign budget – he did not announce that.
The data for the National Council elections have been published previously. This showed that the FDP had the largest budget for the elections, namely 12.4 million francs.
This meant that she had almost twice as much money at her disposal as her main competitor, the Center Party, which received 6.6 million francs in donations. The SVP could count on 11.1 million francs in the Kässeli.
Surprisingly, Donato Scognamiglio (45), a new candidate from the EPP of the Canton of Zurich, had the largest budget as an individual. He had 365,000 francs in his coffers and yet he was not elected. (she)
