Due to liquidity crisis: UN temporarily closes headquarters in Geneva

To save energy and operating costs, the UN headquarters in Geneva will remain closed until mid-January. (archive image).

Above all, the sharp increase in energy prices in Switzerland has hit the UN budget and caused the gates of the Palais des Nations to be closed since December 20. UN spokeswoman Alessandra Velucci confirmed this on Friday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. Radio SRF 1 reported about it for the first time.

The UN would continue to operate during the shutdown, the report said. The employees are in the home office. Employees whose work requires their presence in the palace would still have access. One of the buildings will be reopened in the coming weeks for upcoming conferences.

One reason for the UN’s financial problems is that about fifty member states have not paid their contributions on time, including the US.

The Palais des Nations in Geneva was completed in 1938 and has been the European headquarters of the UN since 1966.
