What is Lukas Paul Spichiger (20) of Biberist SO up to with the Cervelat? At the beginning of October, Juso registered the terms “Cervelat” and “Cervelas” in the trademark register, also in the category for meat products. That reports the “Handelzeitung”.
If the application is approved, he would own the trademarks “Cervelat” and “Cervelas” – he can sell or pledge them or license them for use to third parties. Also means: Butchers and retailers should get such a license – or rename the national sausage.
“Term is well known!”
So far there is no such protection – and as the paper reports, no one has tried to register the term as a trademark for themselves before. Only “Königs-Cervelas” was recognized for a butcher from Deisswil BE.
Whether it will come to that is uncertain. The meat industry thinks not. “The term ‘Cervelat’ is widely known, mainly because it has long made its way into legislation as ‘Cervelas’ as a traditional meat product,” Ruedi Hadorn, director of the Swiss Meat Association, told Handelszeitung. The association therefore assumes that Spichiger will receive a negative decision.
It is not known why Juso wants to protect the national sausage. Neither the “Handelzeitung” nor Blick were able to reach Spichiger. And should he be right? Then we’ll do it like the Northwest Swiss and in the future we’ll just call Cervelats Chlöpfer. (sf)
