The state government is looking for someone who can plan and organize the affairs of the Federal Council.

New year, new job? There is still something available in the Chamber of the Federal Council: Switzerland will have a new Chancellor from January 1, his name is Victor Rossi (55). He was previously vice-chancellor, so his previous position is now vacant. The Federal Council recently placed a vacancy advertisement especially for this purpose.

The special thing: as the new Vice Chancellor, you are particularly close to the state government and you also participate in the top secret meetings of the Federal Council. The Vice Chancellor also prepares these before and after. The person also heads the Federal Council department with approximately 130 employees in the Federal Chancellery.

Only a few women held this position

The job profile requires, among other things, several years of management experience “in an equally demanding role”. Moreover, the work apparently cannot be carried out part-time.

The vacancy advertisement, which also appeared in the newspapers, also states that applications from women are “particularly welcome”. In Switzerland’s history, the position of vice-chancellor has only been filled twice. For example, Corina Casanova (67), who subsequently rose to the top and was also Chancellor from 2008-2015.

The salary the new vice-chancellor can expect is not stated in the advertisement.

A treat for Simonazzi

Chancellor Rossi will be supported by two vice-chancellors heading different departments of the Federal Chancellery. From 1848 to 1896 there was only one Vice-Chancellor, and since then there have always been two.

The second vice chancellor is André Simonazzi, who will remain in office. Simonazzi is the government’s media spokesperson and head of communications. He is also responsible for the presidential services, which help the respective Federal President – this year Viola Amherd (61).

Until a new Gspänli is found for Simonazzi, Jörg De Bernardi (50) will take over on an interim basis. He was vice-chancellor from 2016 to 2019, but then resigned for family reasons. He is not available to fill the position permanently. (she/brother)
