New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. On December 31, the dark evening hours are colorfully illuminated with fireworks. And welcomed the new year with rockets and fireworks.
In the days before New Year’s Eve, Swiss people are increasingly traveling abroad near the border. Shopping for fireworks. But if you want to introduce fireworks to Switzerland, you need to take a few things into account. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Protection (BAZG) draws attention to this.
In principle, anyone who wants to import fireworks needs an import permit from the Federal Police Office (Fedpol). The good news: Pyrotechnic articles for entertainment purposes may be imported without a permit up to a total gross weight of 2.5 kilograms per person. But only if fireworks are actually allowed in Switzerland.
As a general rule, fireworks that explode on the ground cannot be imported – such as firecrackers, firecrackers and petards. The same applies to so-called lady crackers that are longer than 22 millimeters and/or have a diameter of more than three millimeters.
If customs personnel discover prohibited fireworks during import, they will be confiscated. The BAZG also reports that violations of the Explosives Act will be reported.
What for some is the highlight of a successful party irritates animal owners like Corinne Meister (48). The computer scientist keeps chickens, cats and a dog. “My animals don’t like fireworks.” She therefore supports a popular initiative that wants to ban private fireworks that make noise.
At the beginning of November, the citizens’ initiative was submitted to limit fireworks on August 1 and New Year’s Eve. It has come about. This means that the Swiss electorate will decide on the initiative.
Some communities already have a ban on fireworks – completely or partially. Since 2021, the lighting of fireworks in the city center of Bern has been prohibited. The reasoning is that there is not enough space and that the streets are too narrow. The district is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Since 2020, there has also been a fireworks ban in Davos GR – for the entire community. The people voted for a ban.
