After the October 22 elections, the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) published incorrect figures on the strengths of the national parties and only corrected them three days later. Interior Minister Alain Berset then ordered an administrative investigation.
The Federal Council has now taken note of their results. A programming error in an import script was the cause of votes being counted multiple times in three cantons. Contrary to the party’s strengths, its number of seats was unaffected by the collapse.
The investigation shows that no clear duties of care were breached at the BFS. On the other hand, the affected BFS section would have required more control personnel to conduct extensive testing and faster follow-up checks before election day. (ter/SDA)
