Basel had to wait 50 years – now the time has come: since December 13, the canton in the border triangle has the certainty of being represented in the state government again after Hanspeter Tschudi (1913-2002). A week ago on Wednesday, SP politician Beat Jans (59) was elected as successor to federal councilor Alain Berset (51).

This joy costs Basel a lot. The half-day festival costs 300,000 francs. After all, the canton can afford it. On Tuesday, Basel announced that it expected a surplus of 239 million francs for the current year.

There is also a lot to offer for 300,000 francs: a special train took Jans, his wife Tracy (51) and countless guests from Bern to Basel. About 550 drummers and bagpipes, guild bannermen and other musicians accompany Jans on his festive parade through Basel. The parade led from the SBB train station to the market square and then to Claraplatz.

The city center was well filled: “Bravo Beat!” or “Great!” was what the crowd kept saying. “I am moved, I am overwhelmed – what a wonderful welcome,” Jans said during his speech on the market square. It is a great honor to take on the new task in Bern, even though it is not easy for him to leave Basel.

Free night in Basel, free school in Valais

Later, the official election celebration will take place with invited guests in the Volkshaus Basel. But anyone who is not invited can still celebrate: On Friday evening, restaurants in Basel are allowed to remain open without restrictions.

There is no free overnight stay in Valais. But in honor of the election of Viola Amherd (61) as federal president, Valais children have no school on Friday.

On Thursday, the Minister of Defense of Valais was put in the spotlight by her canton. And that is not a waste either: 350,000 francs has been allocated for the presidential celebration. Amherd’s program also started on the train. From Bern the route went via Valais with several stops in between until Amherd’s special day ended with a celebration in her hometown Brig. (sf)
