It was the big surprise: last week it was announced that Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) will give up the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJP). After just a year. Instead, the newly elected Basel federal councilor Beat Jans (59) now has to deal with the difficult asylum file. Baume-Schneider will take over the Interior Department (EDI), which will become vacant following the resignation of Alain Berset (51).

The Jura resident handed over her office and symbolically the key to the EJPD to the Basel resident on Wednesday afternoon. The two not only gave each other good wishes, but also small gifts.

“I hope it works now with the E-ID”

Jans received a book from Baume-Schneider, a strategy game, blank copies of all new Swiss identity documents (for what?) and instructions for setting up an e-ID.

Jans responded to the latest gift as follows: “I hope the E-ID works now. So far I haven’t been able to set this up.” He returned the favor with a bouquet of flowers.

Symbolic issue

The gifts symbolized the great diversity of the EYPD, Baume-Schneider explained. The traditional African game Kalaha stands for migration and the protection of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers. The identity cards for the identity of each person. And the book ‘The Unfinished Direct Democracy’ tells, among other things, how our political system has inspired other states – including states in the US, where Jans’ wife Tracy comes from.

The key transfer is a purely symbolic affair. The resigning or changing magistrates do not have to leave the office until the end of this year.
