The motion by the SP and the Greens was rejected by 35 votes to 18. The proposal called for an increase in the tax-free allowance for taxable income and further changes to the tax rate, which would have particularly benefited low-income earners.
The supporters of the motion argued, among other things, that high inflation is especially difficult for people with low incomes. It is wrong that people who live on the subsistence level also have to pay several hundred francs in taxes.
According to the motion, the annual tax losses of the canton and the municipalities would have amounted to approximately 12 million francs each. Financial director Cornelia Stamm Hurter (SVP) estimates the losses at approximately 17.5 million francs. Changing tax rates is not an appropriate means of compensating for inflation.
Cantonal councilors from SVP, FDP, GLP and Mitte spoke out against the motion. Other measures should be taken to ease the burden on low-income people. In addition, projected tax losses could put individual communities in dire straits. (SDA)
