“The US pulled Finland into NATO. Did we have any disputes with Finland? All previous disputes, including territorial disputes, were settled in the twentieth century,” Putin said in a television interview on Sunday.

«We had very good and warm relations with each other. So far there have been no problems, but there will be now.” Because Russia will now build the Leningrad Military District around the Saint Petersburg metropolis and station certain military units there.

“What did you need that for?” he asked for the address of the neighboring country. ‘It’s complete nonsense. The same applies to the other NATO countries. We don’t have any problems with anyone. But they are artificially creating problems with us because they don’t want to see Russia as a competitor.”

However, Putin did not mention the reason why Finland joined NATO. Due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, Helsinki had abandoned its long-standing neutrality and, together with Sweden, applied for membership in the Western military alliance.

The US recently signed an agreement with Stockholm to use Swedish military facilities. A very similar agreement is about to be signed with Finland: the Finnish government recently published details of a corresponding agreement that will give the US military access to 15 Finnish bases. The agreement will be signed in Washington on Monday.
