Alain Berset in the farewell interview about the intermezzo with the French air force: “I just thought: ouch”

At the end of this year, SP federal council member Alain Berset (r.) will pass the baton to Beat Jans, who will now take over the Ministry of Justice.

Twelve years is enough. Federal President and Minister of Health Alain Berset (51) will say goodbye to the state government at the end of this year. In an interview with the ‘Sonntagszeitung’, the Social Democrat reveals what he will miss the least: ‘The annual announcement of health insurance premiums.’

Premiums continue to rise year after year. Berset did not leave this unscathed either. He also explains that he has always studied comparison portals. After all, he has a family of five, “you feel the increase quite immediately.” Sometimes he switched to a cheaper provider.

“All in all, we didn’t do too badly.”

What he will miss most is contact with the many different people and “feeling the great diversity that there is in Switzerland”.

ChatGPT has no idea about the Federal Council

Berset has remained the same throughout his twelve years in office and he is very proud of that. He has learned a lot and gained a lot of experience. About the pandemic, he says: “All in all, we haven’t done that badly,” and he often hears this abroad.

In the interview, Berset is of course also asked about his intermezzo in the French air force. During a flight in a private plane in July 2022, Berset flew over a restricted zone in France, after which two Rafale fighter jets accompanied the Cessna as it landed.

During the entire operation, Berset really only thought one thing: “Ouch.” During his recent state visit, French President Emmanuel Macron (45) did not ask him about it, Berset says. “I don’t think that gets through to him.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t be bored”

Otherwise, the Federal Council is basically a normal job, Berset continues: “I come to the office alone in the morning and work and attend meetings until the end of the day and I go home again.”

At the same time, however, Berset admits that the office was not always easy on his private life. This was probably especially the case during the corona pandemic.

Because he had already been in parliament for eight years before taking office as a federal councilor, he initially thought he knew how to do it. “When I got here, I realized: I actually have no idea how it really works,” says Berset. Everything was very intense, he thinks it is a shame that the political world – especially due to social media – has become increasingly faster.

For his time after the state government, Berset initially focuses on relaxation: “Listen to more music, finally see more friends again, go to the cinema, read books, maybe go skiing again,” he listed. “Don’t worry, I won’t be bored.” (dba)
