If the marriage fails, that means divorce! In practice it is not that simple. A divorce is complicated and often has disadvantages. This is how you stay together. And how are things in politics?
Even in a delicate relationship such as that of State Councilor Daniel Jositsch (58) and the SP, it comes down to an agreement. The parliamentary group leadership does not want to comment on the matter and the Zurich resident only says friendly ‘Grüezi’, but behind closed doors party members emphasize that a divorce will not help.
And the SP members do this in different ways: many requests to speak come in, from ‘it was expected of him’ to ‘we will meet again’. A year ago, when he succeeded SP councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (63), Jositsch had already disappointed his family.
The requirement then was that it had to be a woman. There was a dinner at Jositsch’s, after which it was thought that he had understood that he had to wait. The surprise became even greater when he continued to do everything he could to get into government. If he had given in then, he would now be a federal councilor.
But because he did not declare then and now that he would not stand for election, the tablecloth has been torn. Even the few in the SP faction who still believed in Jositsch are irritated. Now they are deeply disappointed.
He saw how poorly his campaign was received last year. But Jositsch remained standing at the back of the National Council Chamber with a sour face. Even outside Zurich, people shook their heads at his helpers: ‘How naive can you be?’ ask people who always wanted to know that Jositsch’s personality was not suitable for a position in the Federal Council.
The party is now doing everything it can to look ahead. The fact that she has a new federal councilor, Beat Jans (59), who exudes confidence, appears sympathetic and – unlike Jositsch – follows the party line, creates a good atmosphere.
Behind the scenes, however, they are looking for a base with the Zurich resident, who will probably withdraw from politics in four years anyway. No one can forgive him right now; conversations are needed. But now he must give it a try.
After all, there are plenty of SP players who only have expletives for Jositsch. In between, there are those who find it incomprehensible that he made the same mistake twice. But this time everyone needs more than a half-hearted apology.
A second dinner is far from enough, especially since Jositsch’s cooking skills match his reliability.
