The Marti-Glättli family better not talk about politics these days, otherwise the discussion could end in a relationship crisis. Balthasar Glättli (51), chairman of the Green Party and life partner of SP national councilor Min Li Marti (49), hates the Social Democrats for their actions in the Federal Council elections. “Their solidarity ends at their own garden gate,” he raged in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers. The accusation: “To secure its seat, the SP sold its soul to the power cartel of the Federal Council Parties.”
The next day, Glättli classifies his statements as not mean. The SP looks for itself first, that is its right. “This gives us the freedom for us Greens to now also look at ourselves in future elections for the Federal Council,” he told Blick.
Ten minutes before the start of the elections, the SP leadership announced on Wednesday that it would not provide official election advice for Green Party candidate Gerhard Andrey (47). Only a minority of the parliamentary group wanted to vote for him instead of FDP federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62).
The majority felt it was too sensitive to risk reprisals from the common people if they had helped cut off Cassis. “In the best case, we would now have a federal councilor Jositsch,” says an SP faction member.
The Greens accuse their left-wing alliance partner of deliberately only making their color public just before the elections – to cause as little controversy as possible. It is said that the SP briefed the Greens less than a minute before appearing before the media.
Parts of the SP have some understanding for the anger of the Greens. But also say it clearly: it’s all just temporary barking! The Greens have themselves to blame for that. They had no strategy. After all, they have not used the past four years to build a good candidacy. Because no one within the SP was really happy with the way the Greens launched their candidacy for the Federal Council after the elections.
But the comrades are conciliatory: of course they will continue to work with the junior partner, that is clear to them. Glättli sees it that way too. A clear distinction must be made between substantive politics and elections for the Federal Council. “It would be politically wrong to artificially stir up conflict with the SP after the shift to the right in the elections. “We cannot afford bogus arguments for greater climate protection and social justice,” said the leader of the Green Party.
In this regard, Ticino Green National Councilor Greta Gysin (40) agrees with her party colleague. But it is clear to them: when it comes to other relationships, something will change between the factions – how profound this change will be remains to be seen. Because: “That’s not how you treat political allies.”
