This is what the deputy head of politics thinks about the Federal Council elections: the ticket requirement must disappear!

The newly elected SP councilor Beat Jans thanks the House of Representatives for the confidence.

With Beat Jans, parliament has elected one of the proposed SP candidates for the Federal Council and all previous government members have been confirmed. Everthing okay? No.

If all parties promise to vote for someone from the Comrades’ official ticket, but the wildcat candidate Daniel Jositsch still wins ahead of the nominee Jon Pult by 70 votes, a significant part of parliament has ignored the promises of the party leaders.

Do you remember these elections for the Federal Council?

Research shows that the FDP and the SVP are primarily responsible for Jositsch’s numerous votes. Firstly, the very party whose foreign minister had already been confirmed in the first round voted for Zurich.

Second, the inventor of mandatory tickets did not vote according to the rules she imposed on others. As a reminder, since the election of Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, every SVP member who accepts a wild vote has been thrown out of the party.

Even ‘savages’ can be successful

The ticket requirement must disappear: parliamentary groups are free to nominate only those who suit them, regardless of parliament. But it is the right of the Federal Assembly to ignore this menu and use something else.

For example, the Social Democrats received federal councilors such as Willi Ritschard and Otto Stich. They had to live with this – and as we know, they did it well. But these rules should apply to everyone. Even deselections like that of Christoph Blocher hurt, but instead of him, Widmer-Schlumpf, a strong magistrate, also came to the Federal Council.

Even an SVP has to accept wild candidates. To abandon this in accepting the elections is a contempt for Parliament. If the same rules applied to everyone, the left would have had to swallow an SP federal councilor Jositsch on Wednesday, just as the SVP had a federal councilor Widmer-Schlumpf.
