Shortly after 12 noon the decision was made: Beat Jans (59) has been elected as a new federal council member. In the third ballot and with 134 votes, the Basel resident was elected. Jans succeeds Alain Berset. Basel has a Federal Council for the first time since the resignation of Hans-Peter Tschudi at the end of 1973. It is understandable that there is great joy in the two half-cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land!

But what about the Blick community? A survey shortly after the results showed that the majority were satisfied with Jans. 60 percent of the more than 15,000 readers have the option “He will do well!” chosen. 17 percent are still not sure and about a quarter would have preferred a different candidate. This candidate is often mentioned by name in the comment columns and is not the SP’s second ticket suggestion, Jon Pult, but Daniel Jositsch from Zurich.

“If Jositsch had been on the card, he would have been a federal councilor.”

Reader Hanni Bernasconi knows for sure: “If Jositsch had been on the list, he would have crushed all other candidates, with an excellent result, and would now be a federal councilor. No one within the SP can light a candle to him, that bothers the ‘technocrats’ in the party leadership.” Reader Nicole Lighty is also disappointed: “Too bad, Jositsch didn’t make it. He would have been a good federal councilor.”

Daniel Achermann feels that the will of the people has not prevailed. “I am sure: the people would have chosen Jositsch. Now the best person has been chosen, but preferably the ‘party soldier Jans’.”

“For me, Jans is the right choice”

However, not all votes in the comment column are negative. Bruno Gasser is even relieved that Jositsch was not elected. “Mr Jositsch should now finally realize that he has no chance of ever becoming a federal councilor. The SP leadership had good reasons not to put him on the ticket. He is absolutely not suitable for this position. He lacks leadership experience and personality.”

And finally, a congratulations to Jans. Roland Gasser writes: “It is great that we have a Federal Councilor from Northwestern Switzerland again after a long time. For me, Jans is the right person and he has a lot of political knowledge. Congratulations.”
