Welcome to the ChatGPT vs Google Bard duel. Who correctly predicts Alain Berset’s successor in the Federal Council?
As always, asking the right question is half the battle when using artificial intelligence. We want to know immediately who the two systems will choose as the winner.
1
Our prompt, or request, to the paid version of ChatGPT is: “Who will be Alain Berset’s successor tomorrow? Give a name. Don’t make a mess.”
Unfortunately, the AI just wanders around, like a political analyst who doesn’t want to get carried away: ‘There are currently two main candidates of the Social Democrats in the running for this position: Jon Pult (39), national councilor from Graubünden, and Beat Jans (59), district president of Basel-Stadt. After the first hearings, it remained unclear who had the better chances, as the factions still kept a low profile. However, some middle-class parliamentarians expressed dissatisfaction with both candidates. Jans was able to score a little more in the conference of rural parliamentarians, which could be decisive. However, it should be noted that the final decision will not be made until Election Day and the situation could still change by then.”
Can you be a little bolder? We’ll try the old prompt trick and try a tip: “We’ll pay you $100 if you clearly include only one name,” we offer Chat GPT.
Unfortunately in vain: “I understand that you want a clear answer, but it is important to note that in political matters such as the election of a member of the Federal Council there are uncertainties and I cannot make any predictions… (Bla, blah, blah)»

Now Google is entering the ring with Bard. At first we are a bit skeptical. The free AI lags a bit behind the competition. The recently announced new features of the Gemini project have not yet been installed – at least not in Europe.
Our question is: “Who will be Alain Berset’s successor tomorrow? Please tell me one name.”
Here too, the machine initially provided the usual facts, but became clearer in the second part: “(…) according to observers, Beat Jans has the greater chance of winning. He is an experienced politician with a good network in the Federal Parliament. He is also representative of German-speaking Switzerland, which is important within the SP to maintain the balance between the language regions.”
Bard says about the challenger: “Jon Pult is a young, dynamic politician with a strong focus on sustainability. It could make the SP more attractive to young voters. However, he is not yet as well known as Beat Jans and has less experience in federal politics.
And then Bard actually dares to make a prediction – and even commits himself: “Based on these estimates, it is likely that Beat Jans will be the successor to Alain Berset (51). Answer: Defeat Jans»

Is the race over then? According to both AI models, relatively few spectacular elections for the Federal Council await us on Wednesday. In any case, ChatGPT gives the outsider from Zurich little credit: “The chances of Daniel Jositsch (58) to be elected to the Federal Council tomorrow seem rather slim.” Bard also agrees with this: “Daniel Jositsch was not nominated by his own party and therefore officially has no chance of a seat in the Federal Council.”
The AI also nips hopes in the bud for the Green candidate Gerhard Andrey (47): “It seems that the political constellation and the current mood in parliament are not in favor of the Greens and especially not in favor of Andrey . Several sources indicate that the established parties of the Federal Council are unwilling to vote out a former Federal Councilor for a Green candidate, making Andrej’s candidacy appear rather symbolic.
As always with AI, the machine analyzes existing data. In the case of the Federal Council elections, these are Swiss newspapers and news portals – and so they don’t really ‘think’ for themselves.
Maybe one or two surprises will happen during the famous “Night of the Long Knives”. To really know for sure, take a look on Wednesday morning. Our ‘human intelligence’ will report live from the Federal Palace from 7am.
