Daniel Jositsch (58) is doing everything he can to become a federal councilor. The Zurich SP Council is said to have even asked the SVP leadership how much support it had among the largest faction in the federal parliament.

To ensure that this approach does not immediately spread in Bern, Jositsch did not contact faction leader Thomas Aeschi (44) or party leader Marco Chiesa (49), but someone further away – but still very close to SVP – mastermind Christoph Blocher (83): namely Toni Brunner (49).

Meeting in the sun

Many discussions still come together with former SVP president Brunner. If no one wants to notice that the SVP leadership is planning something, they are invited to Landgasthof Sonne in Toggenburg. Then Chiesa, Magdalena Martullo (54) and Co. travel to the “House of Freedom” in Ebnat-Kappel SG. The illustrious circle of SVP leaders used to be called to Hotel Bellevue. Now more and more often in St. Gallic. What remains is that Toni Brunner is still important.

Daniel Jositsch knows this too. The Zurich resident is at the bottom of his own parliamentary group, because he did not want to lag behind in the elections to succeed the retiring SP federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (63) a year ago. To this day, the party has not forgiven him for not going to the front of the National Council Chamber during the by-elections to declare that he was not running for office.

answer the phone

Although most of his comrades technically trust him to hold the Federal Council office, many today say they are disappointed in Jositsch as a person. Moreover, the Council of States is politicizing the right-wing edge of the party in many – but not all – files. This also makes him a no-go at the SP for several faction members.

In bourgeois factions, however, it is precisely this political line that makes Jositsch interesting. At the same time, party and parliamentary faction leaders have repeatedly emphasized that only official candidates should be elected. The SVP would still not be able to make friends with Jans or Pult. Jositsch must have heard that too.

So Daniel Jositsch picked up the phone to see what opportunities he had with the SVP, as Brunner revealed to a group close to the SVP. After all, Blocher himself had promoted a wild SP candidacy. But at the same time he made it clear that for him someone like Jositsch, who absolutely wants to become a federal councilor, was “suspicious”.

Favorite candidate against his will

In the hours before the elections for the Federal Council, another SP name is doing the rounds in SVP circles: Roger Nordmann (50). The former leader of the Social Democrats does not have the reputation of being a left-hander. But Nordmann is reliable, says the SVP.

It is unlikely that the former party leader himself will be happy with the support of the SVP. No one else in his party can envy him for that – apart from one person, of course, who wants to become a federal councilor for almost everything in the world. Jositsch himself does not want to comment to Blick in connection with the elections for the Federal Council.
