After some spiteful discussions, Forbes received 88 votes for a four-year term in the second round, 75 of which went to Kenyan Abbas Gullet. There had previously been a confrontation between the Executive Council and the 191 national associations.
“My first priority will be to bring us all back together. We are a movement,” the new president said. Her predecessor Rocca revealed that Gullet had received sexual harassment allegations from 2016 to 2018.
Rocca himself resigned after a conflict of interest: as president of the Italian region of Lazio, he had withdrawn support for Pride in Rome.
The IFRC board has decided to postpone the elections until October at the latest. However, the extraordinary general meeting called for a vote amid boos.
If Gullet had been elected, the Kenyan would have had to wait for the required external investigation to be completed before coming to power. The most likely scenario would then have been a provisional presidency of the former head of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Corps, Manuel Bessler. This was what the Executive Council proposed when it decided to postpone the elections. (SDA)
