The Council of States clearly rejects this: Research into endometriosis will no longer be funded

The Council of States has spoken out against more funding for research into the abdominal disease endometriosis.

The Council rejected a motion by Benjamin Roduit (Centre/US) that was adopted by the National Council during the autumn session with 23 votes in favor, 11 votes and 9 abstentions. That’s the end of the deal.

With its decision, the council followed the Advisory Committee on Science, Education and Culture of the Council of States (WBK-S). A no vote was requested with 6 votes in favor and 0 abstentions.

State Councilor Isabelle Chassot (center, FR) explained that national research programs should continue to be initiated using a “bottom-up approach” and not “top-down”. Commission chairman Benjamin Würth (center, SG) echoed the same sentiments: it is not appropriate for politicians to start telling the SNSF which research it should support. Politics cannot determine research priorities.

The concerns of those affected are acknowledged

However, the Commission recognizes the concerns of those affected. She was pleased to see that as part of the National Research Program (NFP) “Gender Medicine and Research”, R11 million was allocated to projects aimed at investigating the inclusion of sex and gender aspects in medical research. In conjunction with the NRP, it will also be possible to finance projects in the field of the disease endometriosis.

Endometriosis is not a gender problem, but a women’s disease, replied State Councilor Céline Vara (Greens, NE). Lucerne State Councilor Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger pointed out that ten percent of women in Switzerland suffer from endometriosis. She wants to abstain, but expects the disease to be investigated separately in the NHP ‘Gender Medicine and Research’.

Like the WBK-S, the Federal Council voted to reject the motion. Research Minister Guy Parmelin said the SNSF is already funding individual research projects in the field of endometriosis. The Federal Council also considers the bottom-up principle as a central element for today’s successful research funding. That is why he does not want to prescribe the subject of endometriosis to research. (SDA)
