The climate has become harsher. Swiss politicians are said to have faced strong hostility, especially in recent months.
About thirty representatives of parties, security authorities, cantons, municipalities and civil society appeared at Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider’s round table to raise concerns about the hatred and its consequences for Swiss militia democracy.
Hatred and threats can lead to politicians withdrawing from the public political debate or citizens to refrain from exercising political functions, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJP) wrote in a statement.
The discussion showed that hostility towards politicians recorded by police has decreased since the end of the corona pandemic, but “the brutality and violent tone have remained,” the EJPD wrote. There is also often hostility at the cantonal and municipal level.
Because little scientific research has been done into the phenomenon in Switzerland, the University of Zurich will conduct a basic study into it. Experts also expect improvements through stricter regulation of communication platforms such as Facebook, X, Google and YouTube. According to the EYPD, a corresponding consultation template is currently being developed. (SDA)
