Environmental organizations are going to court: wolf hunting will soon be over in Valais too

Graubünden and Valais have together released 15 wolf packs for shooting.

More than a week after it started, the wolf hunt in Graubünden has been canceled for the time being. Last Friday, environmental groups filed a complaint with the Federal Administrative Court against the shooting. Until there is control, hunting of wolves in the canton has been stopped.

The fighters will probably also be recalled in Valais. Pro Natura, WWF and BirdLife will also file a complaint against shooting orders in this canton. Because the documents were received later than from the Graubünden authorities, we are currently still examining them carefully, says WWF spokesperson Jonas Schmid. The wolf hunt in Valais is expected to temporarily end by Wednesday at the latest.

“General stop surprised us”

The environmental organizations do not defend themselves against all wolf shootings. As is now known, the associations in Graubünden only objected to the shooting of four of the eight packs. In Valais they want to have three of the seven shooting orders assessed by the Federal Administrative Court.

From the organizations’ point of view, shooting these packs is disproportionate. Parliament has clearly stated that shooting entire packs should remain the absolute exception and should only be used for packs that have “gotten out of control”, they say, which justifies their opposition. “Contrary to the Federal Council’s guarantees, the shooting of entire packs has now been approved, with very few farm animals being killed.”

Canton was surprised

When asked, the canton of Graubünden reported that the order to temporarily completely stop wolf hunting came from the court. It was only announced today that complaints had been filed against only some of the shooting orders. The Graubünden authorities themselves have not yet received the complaint.

It can be assumed that hunting of the other packs, about which no complaints were made, will soon be allowed again. According to the complainants, the court has published further information. However, it is unclear when this will take place. (lha)
