Elections 2023: Young women from Zurich participated less often in the second round of voting

Fewer voters took part in the second round of voting in the city of Zurich than in the first round: the decline was greatest among 29-year-old women.

In the city of Zurich, 42.7 percent of eligible voters took part in the second round of voting on November 19, when Tiana Angelina Moser (GLP) won the second seat in the Council of States. On October 22, 51.6 percent had cast their vote.

This decline is visible in all age groups, Statistics City Zurich reported in a statement on Monday. “The differences between the first and second voting rounds were particularly large among young voters.”

Participation has fallen sharply, especially among young women: the biggest change occurred in the city of Zurich among 29-year-old women. While 54.7 percent of them voted for the National Council and the Council of States in the first round, only 34.7 percent voted in the race for the open seat of the Council of States – a minus of 20 percentage points.

The differences decreased with age; Only among Zurich residents over the age of 55 was the difference between the two ballots less than ten percentage points. From the age of 70 onwards, participation differed only slightly.

The Statistical City of Zurich also anonymously compared the voting cards submitted on November 19 with the tax data. It turned out that high earners and rich people went to the polls more often.

According to the announcement, the average taxable income of voters was about 53,000 francs, about a quarter higher than that of non-voters (40,000 francs). These differences are even more pronounced when it comes to taxable wealth: the average wealth of voters was 96,000 francs – about four times higher than that of non-voters (23,000 francs).

This is also reflected in the different turnout at elections in the districts. Participation was highest in the high-income districts of Oberstrass (56.2 percent) and Fluntern and Hottingen (both 55.6). In the Hirzenbach district, 25.4 percent of eligible voters went to the polls. (SDA)
