SonntagsBlick: Mr. Bregy, how chaotic will the Federal Council elections be?
Philip Bregy: Of course, as always, so-called secret plans circulate in the media. But I assume that the elections will be orderly. The Center has always made it clear: We will not vote out the current members of the state government on December 13. This takes a lot of pressure off.

So you rule out an attack on an FDP seat?
During its meeting on November 24, the Center faction unanimously decided not to stand as a candidate for a second Center seat in the Federal Council on December 13.

Would Gerhard Pfister refuse if he were elected as a wild candidate?
I don’t know what else I could add to Gerhard Pfister’s clear statements about this. The center does not offer hands for tactical games on December 13.

What will it look like in the future if there is an FDP vacancy?
Since the fall elections, the center has had five more seats than the FDP in the United Federal Assembly. This is related to a voter mandate: in the medium term we want to take on more government responsibility again. The SVP and FDP are overrepresented in the Federal Council with four seats, the left-wing camp would be the same with three seats.

Will the Green candidate Gerhard Andrey still receive votes from the center faction?
We did not listen to Mr Andrey. For the reasons already mentioned: Voting out next Wednesday is out of the question for us. It is not the right time for a Green Federal Council.

Will the center hold on to the SP ticket?
We won’t hear the candidates until Tuesday. If Beat Jans and Jon Pult declare their candidacy during the hearing, the center will remain with the ticket. But the point is different.

Namely?
After these elections for the Federal Council, the parties must go through the books again: it cannot be the case that every time the United Federal Assembly does not comply with a fine, there is a threat of a national crisis. There have already been good federal council members, such as Otto Stich, who were not elected via the ticket.

Representatives of the SVP are apparently considering such a maneuver.
It is the SVP that has laid down in its statutes that elections resulting from a wild candidacy automatically result in exclusion from the party. That the SVP of all people is now flirting with this is grotesque.

Politics in Federal Bern is still made in the parliamentary groups. They are more decisive than the associations. Elisabeth Baume-Schneider was not chosen because of the Valais black-nose sheep – and I say that as a Valais resident.
