If the SP has its way, one of the two federal council members should become: Beat Jans (l.) Jon Pult (r.).

Who will be in state government next year? We will know that next week at the latest, because the elections for the Federal Council are on Wednesday.

Then it is important to determine a successor for the retiring Alain Berset (51). At the same time, all other members of the government must also be confirmed. In particular, not everyone wants to like the FDP’s two seats on the Federal Council. The Greens are attacking one of these seats with their candidate for the Federal Council, Gerhard Andrey (47).

Not a fan of the ticket system

Elections for the Federal Council are often predictable because parliament votes in favor of a candidate previously nominated by its own party on the basis of a so-called ticket. In the current case at the SP, these are Beat Jans (59) and Jon Pult (39).

Could it still be exciting next week? On Friday, the center surprised with a special statement. For once he shared the same opinion as former federal councilor Christoph Blocher (83), said Central Councilor Pirmin Bischof (64). “Constitutionally, the ticket system is not allowed in Federal Council elections,” said the Solothurn resident at the SRF Arena.

Plea for wild candidacy

The system, in which candidates are only elected on the basis of a ticket indicating which party has a vacant seat in the Federal Council, was ‘invented’ after Blocher was voted out, says state councilor Bishop Bisschop: ‘That was not a good idea.’

We actually know the word ‘ticket’ from the theater and cinema, that’s where it belongs,” says Bischof.

In response to moderator Sandro Brotz’s answer that he had just made a plea for the election of a “wild” candidate in next Wednesday’s elections for the Federal Council, the Center Council of States says: “Exactly!” He did not elaborate on why the center was dissatisfied with the two SP members on the ticket. The center also has hearings with the SP men only on Tuesday.

SP is not impressed

SVP politician Alfred Heer (62) was also dissatisfied with the selection of SP candidates: Jans and Pult are “identical twins who simply speak a different dialect.” This is disappointing for the SVP; On Tuesday, the parliamentary faction meeting will discuss whether the SVP will stick to the SP’s ticket. However, he does not believe there will be a surprise on Wednesday.

SP Neo-National councilor David Roth (38) saw the other parties’ theories as a ‘storm in a teacup’, which was certainly good for the dramaturgy of the broadcast. But he wasn’t worried about Wednesday’s election, he said at the arena.
