Between 1970 and 2000, several thousand cases of irregularities in international adoptions probably occurred. This is evident from a report from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), which the Federal Council took note of on Friday.
The study examined adoptions from Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, India, Colombia, Korea, Lebanon, Peru and Romania, the Federal Office of Justice wrote in a statement. According to these documents, there were “indications of illegal practices, child trafficking, falsified documents and missing information about origin” in these countries of origin.
The Federal Council regrets that the authorities have not sufficiently fulfilled their responsibility towards these children and their families. “These failures by the authorities continue to shape the lives of the adoptees to this day,” the report said.
The cantons are now responsible for supporting those affected in finding their origin. The Federal Council has also commissioned a group of experts to submit in-depth clarifications to it by the end of 2024. (SDA)
