The Covid-19 pandemic impacted marriages, divorces and births among the Swiss population. The Federal Statistical Office (BFS) announced that the latter in particular had increased significantly. A special phenomenon occurred in Switzerland.

A study by the BFS showed that the pandemic led to an unexpected development in the number of births. Even before the pandemic, births in Switzerland were declining. A first baby boom was recorded between December 2020 and March 2021. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 4.5 percent.

A second baby boom was visible between July and October 2021, the report said. The number of births was 5.5 percent higher than in the same period last year. While the first baby boom was also recorded in other European countries, the second is a purely Swiss phenomenon.

Fewer marriages

Before the pandemic, a decline in the number of marriages had already been observed, the BFS wrote. At the start of the actual wedding season in May 2020, 42 percent fewer marriages were concluded than in May a year ago.

Divorce rates were trending upward before the pandemic. However, in 2020, divorce judgments fell by four percent compared to the previous year, the BFS writes. Even after the 2022 pandemic, there would have been a decline of 5.6 percent. (SDA)
