The Swiss was on his way to work in the morning when the attack took place. Someone attacked the employee of the Swiss embassy in Tehran with a knife and stabbed him in the hand.
CH Media newspapers reported on the attack that took place in September, as confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA). The attacker is said to be an employee of the visa department.
It is the second tragic incident involving Swiss diplomats or embassy staff in just a few months. As CH Media knows, a Swiss defense attaché was found injured in a hotel in Tehran in June. The man had significant injuries to his head, knees, chest and abdomen. He is based in Islamabad, Pakistan, but is also responsible for Iran, where he was currently on a business trip.
He is attached to the Ministry of Defense (VBS) as a defense attaché. This told CH Media that the man suffered a mild seizure, fell and suffered a head injury. The medical clarifications so far do not indicate any outside influence.
The incidents are apparently the subject of discussion among diplomats. There is criticism that the federal government wants to sweep this under the rug. The EDA and VBS have not provided any public information. “Just no negative reports,” an anonymous source tells CH Media.
The fact that two such accidents occur within such a short period of time also apparently makes some federal employees suspicious. The question is what caused the defense attaché’s attack of weakness. And was the attacker a random victim or not?
There is no concrete evidence that the incidents are related. It remains pure speculation.
However, in 2021, a mysterious death of a Swiss diplomat occurred in Tehran. The employee was found dead in front of her home. The employee, who was in charge of the department that represents US interests in Iran, fell from the balcony of her 17th floor apartment. At that time, the federal public prosecutor’s office had opened proceedings for “suspicion of an extraordinary death”. This is still running.
Nevertheless, the FDFA “does not recognize any connection between these incidents based on the currently known facts,” as it explained to Blick. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not want to provide further information – for security reasons and to protect privacy.
All Swiss missions abroad have a security concept to protect infrastructure and embassy staff, the department further emphasizes. The concept is continuously revised and adjusted if necessary. If a security incident does occur, the FDFA initiates the necessary investigations “and takes additional security measures if necessary.” All employees are also regularly trained and made aware of safety issues.
