Viola Amherd’s new State Secretariat for Security is expected to start in January. Unfortunately, time is slowly running out.

Federal councilor Viola Amherd (61) is facing challenges in filling the new State Secretariat for Security. At the end of October there was already a tremor in Federal Bern: your first candidate, former ambassador Jean-Daniel Ruch (60), had to leave his seat before taking office.

The reason: Ruch would pose a security risk. Accusations about his private life pointed to possible blackmail, according to research by Blick. The search for a replacement initially looked promising; the renowned diplomat Thomas Greminger (62) was the top favorite.

Top diplomat allegedly ignored security checks

Simply: Greminger now confirms that he is no longer in the selection process, reports the “Tages-Anzeiger”. Reportedly due to problems with the Personal Security Check (PSP), which the federal government uses to screen its executive staff for risks in a complex process. It is said that the top diplomat himself has decided not to undergo another review. This means that Minister of Defense Amherd will lose the second favorite for her prestige object within a very short time.

Why did the federal government not notice the women’s escapades?

The decision is surprising because according to the “Tages-Anzeiger” the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) states that it has had no problems with the ambassador so far. Now time for Amherd is becoming increasingly scarce. Because the position of State Secretary, number two in Defense, should actually have been filled at the beginning of 2024.

It is unclear whether the vacancy can be filled in time

The Ministry of Defense (DDPS) meanwhile emphasizes that the new State Secretariat is expected to start on January 1, 2024. The filling of vacancies has resumed and should take place in the coming weeks, as confirmed by Blick surveys.

However, it is unclear whether the position can even be filled in time given the time. And whether a new search committee is needed. In early November, VBS announced that the position would not be advertised again and that no new search committee would be formed. (oco)
