The total cost – including the project planning loan and the study contract – amounts to 75.3 million francs. Originally it was 48 million francs. The costs were caused by inflation, the VAT increase, the additional expenditure on construction services and the costs of decommissioning work and remediation of pollutants.
According to the government, the renovation is necessary so that the building complex can meet operational and safety requirements. The building was built in the late 1960s. The start of construction work is scheduled for next year. The school’s activities will then be moved to the Bernapark in Deisswil for at least ten years.
After the renovation, the building at the Schänzlihalde will initially be used as a temporary structure for the Neufeld and Kirchenfeld secondary schools, which are also being renovated. The canton of Bern will be able to make better use of the building in the future: while there are currently only 300 to 600 people in the building per day, in the future there will be a maximum of 1,200.
