What is the condition of the soldiers? That’s what the federal government wants to know.

Defense Minister Viola Amherd (61) wants to feel the heartbeat of her soldiers. The Army is planning a pilot test to examine the athletic performance of Army members and military personnel. ‘Fit on Duty’ is the name of the project that wants to analyze health data in real time from next year.

The Federal Council approved the pilot test on Wednesday. Federal Data Protection Commissioner Adrian Lobsiger (63) also gave the green light.

The project is expected to run until 2028. The aim is to monitor the physical and psychological condition of the army members and see how it develops over time – from the RS until their release from mandatory military employ. The goal is to improve physical performance throughout the military career, detect critical health problems at an early stage and prevent accidents and injuries.

The army wants to measure soldiers’ health data using sensors. They would work in the same way as smartwatches, with which you can measure your heart rate, for example.

The military is also trying to improve the fitness of its members in other ways. There has been a sports app for years that allows future recruits to prepare for military service. The army also wants to equip barracks with fitness rooms.

Last May it was announced that seventy military gyms would be built across Switzerland. Last month, the federal government awarded a Berne company the contract to equip the military gyms. They are scheduled to open in just under a year. The great sweating in the service of the fatherland can soon begin. (lha)
