Not just any left: the center gave GLP-Moser a basket

The citizens are outraged. They accuse the newly elected GLP state councilor Tiana Moser (44) of blinding the electorate in Zurich. To increase her chances in a duel against SVP competitor Gregor Rutz (51), she pretended to be an ordinary citizen. However, at the weekend Moser announced that she wanted to form a community with the Greens in the new parliamentary term.

“Everyone who campaigned for the election of Tiana Moser is now experiencing their green miracle,” complains FDP national councilor Christian Wasserfallen (42) about X. “You all voted for a Green and not a Liberal. You allowed yourself to be blinded.”

Clear case for ordinary people

The ‘NZZ’ also accuses Moser of having entered into an alliance with the very party that is extremely anti-growth and anti-economic. For the SVP president of Zurich, Domenik Ledergerber (36), this is “clearly a political decision”, as he says. “You go to a group where you feel politically at home.”

But research by Blick shows that Moser was rejected in advance by the citizens. It is even said that there was a deal with the Greens beforehand. However, after they suffered significant losses in the elections to the Council of States, the agreement was no longer valid, it is said.

The newly appointed state councilor Moser then approached the Center Party. This is confirmed by several independent sources. Moser himself could not be reached for comment.

“The middle no longer needs to curry favor with others”

Center chairman Gerhard Pfister (61) would like to strengthen the center block in the longer term. A GLP-Moser approach would have been a good match. But many centrist members of the Council of States see it differently: the majority of them reject Moser’s confession. “We have a strong peasant bloc: if they only hear light green, it immediately triggers defensive reflexes,” says a centrist politician.

Moreover, the middle group in the Council of States is now relatively large. “You now have a certain position, a certain self-confidence and no longer have to ingratiate yourself with others,” the party says. A certain degree of homogeneity in the group is therefore preferable. At the same time, it can be a challenge to have someone in the group who actually belongs to a different faction: “That can lead to friction. That is why the middle is cautious.”

More weight with the Greens

Because Moser is the only green liberal in the Council of States, it is an advantage if she joins a faction. In this way she can increase her stake in the Stöckli from the start.

Moreover, Moser was apparently able to make certain demands on the small group of Greens when it came to the distribution of committee seats. She should have been at the back of the middle faction.
