Chair support after the elections for the Federal Council is inevitable: the knives are already being sharpened in Basel

The final decision will be taken on December 13: parliament will then re-elect the Federal Council. This not only concerns the vacant seat of outgoing SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51), but also the attack on the FDP seat of Ignazio Cassis (62). The Greens have officially announced the attack. And the FDP fears that a “secret plan against Cassis” will also be launched from the center.

But whoever is elected, someone benefits because a mandate becomes available elsewhere.

Basel competes for Jan’s seat

In Basel for example. The knives are already being sharpened! District President Beat Jans (59) starts the Federal Council race from pole position. As a precaution, the canton has already set a date for a replacement election. On March 3, 2024, voters in Basel would decide who would replace Jans in the cantonal government.

It is already clear that in the event of an emergency there will be a harsh confrontation. The SP currently has three seats in the seven-member government, the Liberal Democratic Party two seats and the Center and the GLP one seat each.

It is logical that the SP wants to defend the seat. The first names are already circulating. Possible candidates include national councilor Sarah Wyss (35), former national councilor Mustafa Atici (54) or party leader Lisa Mathys (45). Probably some major councilors will also have similar thoughts if Jans is elected.

But the comrades certainly don’t have a seat. The common people will certainly launch an attack, especially the FDP. But the SVP is also combative.

It is also conceivable that the green camp will also attempt a government comeback. Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan (43), belonging to the local Basta party in Basel, is said to have ambitions. This would also mean that the population with a migrant background would be represented in the government. However, Basel’s entire government will be re-elected in autumn 2024. It is quite possible that the green camp will be patient until then so as not to alienate alliance partner SP.

Hope for a slide in Graubünden

In the canton of Graubünden it will be less spectacular if Jon Pult makes the jump to the Federal Council. Franzsika Preisig (50) would benefit from this. On the Bünder SP list she reached the first replacement place in the elections for the National Council and was therefore able to move up. The freelance lawyer and teacher is the mother of four children and lives in Samedan.

The core themes include the housing shortage, including second home policy, transport and energy policy, and family and education policy. Since Pult has a good chance of winning the Federal Council office, Preisig can have the highest hopes for succession.

Hardly any chances for the Greens

For Margot Chauderna (28), on the other hand, the chances are minimal. If green challenger Gerhard Andrey (47) were surprisingly successful in the elections for the Federal Council, the woman from Freiburg would advance. She is co-chair of the Young Greens and vice-chair of the Greens and has been a politician in the Freiburg city parliament since 2022.

And if a secret plan feared by the FDP became effective and, for example, center president Gerhard Pfister (61) was elected to the state government, Peter Rust (49), the center cantonal president, would move into the large room on the Zug. National Council.
