Christopher Luxon is sworn in as head of New Zealand’s Conservative government

The 53-year-old new prime minister on Monday swore allegiance to King Charles III, his heirs and successors in the Commonwealth country, before signing his oath of office. His National Party had clearly won the mid-October parliamentary elections, but was dependent on a coalition with the right-wing liberal ACT and NZ First, known for its anti-immigrant views, to form a government. Only after difficult negotiations was an agreement reached at the end of last week.

NZ First Leader Winston Peters will serve as deputy leader for the first 18 months of the three-year term and will then be replaced by ACT leader David Seymour. Peters is also Minister of Foreign Affairs in the twenty-member cabinet. The Pacific state has been governed by the social democratic Labor Party for the past six years, initially under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and, after her surprise resignation in January, by Chris Hipkins.

The new government leader is a successful businessman and has worked for the consumer goods company Unilever for a long time, including leading the company’s branch in Canada. In 2011, he became director of domestic airline Air New Zealand. Luxon has only been a member of parliament since 2020 – from then on his political career took off. (SDA)
