On Friday evening, the SP faction led by Samira Marti (29) and Samuel Bendahan (43) will decide whether it will participate in the elections to succeed the outgoing federal councilor Alain Berset (51) with a two-person ticket or whether it will propose three candidates.
While two-candidate tickets are common in Federal Council elections, this is not the case with three-candidate tickets. It is therefore not surprising that the SP party council recommends to the parliamentary group not to nominate a trio, but only a duo, to the Federal Assembly for the elections on December 13.
The Bernese national councilor Matthias Aebischer (56), the Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann (45), the Graubünden national councilor Jon Pult (39), the Basel government councilor Beat Jans (59), the Zurich councilor Daniel Jositsch (58) and the Vaudois want National councilor Roger Nordmann (50) will be on the ticket.
It is certain that Jositsch has no chance of getting a place on the ticket – regardless of whether it is a two-person or three-person ticket. It is the fault of the Zurich Council of States that it did not become the official SP candidate. His behavior during the replacement elections for the retiring SP federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (63) will not be forgotten. Although the group agreed that they wanted a woman to succeed Sommaruga, Jositsch put herself in the spotlight on election day.
Things look different at Evi Allemann. Although she was already in discussions about Sommaruga’s successor, she accepted that she had not made the ticket.
This time there is no specification from the SP as to whether a woman or a man should inherit Berset. Because Allemann is the only woman in the field of candidates, her chances of getting a ticket increase enormously if there is a three-person ticket. As a self-proclaimed party that supports women, the SP can hardly afford not to take women into account if there are three seats.
On Saturday, the SP will decide which two or three people they will nominate to the Federal Assembly to succeed Berset. It is an unwritten law that national and state councils adhere to the suggestions of the parliamentary group. (pt)
