Is the GLP breaking an election promise?: Green-liberal Berners flirt with the SVP

In the city of Bern there is discussion within the GLP whether one should sleep with the SVP.

One of the worst things in politics is lying to your voters. The switch of Isabel Garcia (60) from the Green Liberals to the FDP made headlines this spring. Just eleven days after her election as canton councilor of Zurich, she decided that she would rather be an FDP member, knowing full well that she would hardly have been elected on the liberal list.

There is currently a lot of talk about a change in the other direction: the son of the outgoing Zurich State Councilor Ruedi Noser (62), David Noser, is going to GLP.

In general, it is difficult when candidates from one party switch to another party after the elections or suddenly take a different position than before. Coincidence or not: What is striking is that the GLP is repeatedly affected.

Promises should no longer apply

And now the GLP again: if the local party of Bern promised this summer not to join forces with the SVP in the elections for the city council of Bern, that is to say the city council, this suddenly no longer applies.

Anyone who supported the two Bernese National Council members Kathrin Bertschy (44) or Melanie Mettler (45) did so in October in the belief that their GLP was keeping its distance from the SVP. Research by the “Capital” portal even confirms that the Berne GLP promise to the SVP is no longer valid.

Common cause with the SVP

The left has been a force in the federal city for years. Red-Green has the majority in the city council with four seats. Bernese security director Reto Nause (52), who has just been elected to the National Council, is a centrist politician and the only non-leftist in the executive branch. Together, the Red-Green Center (RGM) strengthens the government – also because it is elected using proportional representation.

As the “Capital” reported, a broad alliance from the center to the SVP should now come together in view of the election recall in Bern in 2024. In addition to the SVP, there should be the FDP, the center, the EVP and also the GLP .

Yesterday’s conversation

The seats of the outgoing Green Party Franziska Teuscher (65) and SP Finance Director Michael Aebersold (61) must be filled in 2024. Nausea also leaves. There is talk of a broad alliance, not only to achieve civilian representation in the city council for the latter, but also to capture two seats at the same time.

In June, Michael Ruefer (37), co-GLP president of the city of Bern, said in the Bern Tamedia newspapers that a joint election campaign with the SVP would be seen as unlikely. Now he suddenly no longer wants to respond to the subject to Blick.

Your own ambitions are more important

However, party members confirm behind closed doors that a dispute has broken out within the GLP over the question of whether or not to work with the SVP.

While some members are convinced that the party would dig its own grave, others, according to a concerned member, believe that everything should be done to have two citizens in the city council in the future, even if they do this together with the SVP. thing.

According to various sources, especially those who want to join the city council for the Green Liberals should speak out in order to enter the election campaign without fear of the SVP.
