Chairman of the Zurich Hospital Association demands: “Hospitals must change radically”

The chairman of the Hospital Association Zurich (VZK) calls for a change in the care paradigm in hospitals – to address the shortage of skilled workers: “We must radically convert hospitals to outpatient care,” says Christian Schär. (symbol image)

This would mean that patients would not spend the night in the hospital before and after a procedure. “This does not require shifts, but it can be done on five days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Schär said in an interview with Tamedia published on Wednesday. “If we provide as much outpatient treatment as possible, we will greatly reduce the skilled labor shortage.”

However, in order to do this, the outpatient rate would have to be cost-effective, according to Schär. Today it covers only 84 percent of operating costs. “Our financing system puts the hospital at a disadvantage if it treats patients on an outpatient basis instead of inpatiently.”

Such a profound change in favor of working conditions in healthcare is necessary to address the shortage of skilled workers, Schär said. “So far there hasn’t been enough pressure to change anything. Before Covid, hospitals were doing even better financially and could make do in terms of staff with foreign specialists. But things will get worse in the future.”

According to the VZK chairman, the measures of the healthcare initiative are not sufficient – and limited in time. “The nursing initiative is important because it promotes education. “Hospitals, schools and students should receive more money,” Schär explains, “but it does not lead to lasting improvement.” The younger generation is no longer willing to work three shifts seven days a week.
