The federal government is investigating price increases: will the vignette become more expensive soon?

The Federal Council is considering increasing the vignette price.

FDP state councilor Alex Farinelli (41) called for measures to improve traffic management in a proposal. The Federal Council then replied to the Ticino politician that they wanted to issue an interpreter order. Part of this includes “the increase in the vignette price”.

By increasing the price of the vignette, the federal government wants to raise extra money for road projects. However, when asked by Tamedia VerkehrsMonitor, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) remained tight-lipped about the size of a possible price increase. “The Federal Council is expected to submit the report on traffic management to parliament this spring,” media spokesperson Thomas Rohrbach explains.

The federal government wanted to increase the vignette price from 40 to 100 francs in 2013. However, the project failed at the ballot box by a whopping 60.5 percent.

Union rejects price increase

If one assumes that an increase of 60 francs is aimed for this time too, this would certainly mean a significant increase in the budget. According to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), 10.5 million vignettes were sold last year. At the current price of 40 francs, this produces an income of 420 million francs. At a price of 100 francs, this would amount to more than a billion francs.

However, there is already resistance to a possible price increase. Fabio Regazzi (61), president of the Swiss Trade Association (SGV), explained: “According to our strategy, we reject increases in taxes and levies, such as the vignette.” The price increase would place a heavy burden on companies with larger fleets.
