“Cassis bows to Israel”: Member of Parliament Carlo Sommaruga does not want a ban on Hamas

According to the chairman of the Switzerland-Palestine parliamentary group, a ban on Hamas in Switzerland would be a mistake. It would harm the country’s long-term interests, Carlo Sommaruga said. (archive image)

If Switzerland were to ban organizations other than those banned by the UN, “you would open Pandora’s box,” Sommaruga said in an interview with “Le Matin Dimanche”. “You open yourself up to pressure from countries that will make the same request, for example Turkey for the PKK.”

This week it was announced that Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis wants to ban Hamas through a special law. “Unfortunately, Mr. Cassis bows to Israel instead of seeing the long-term interests of our country,” Geneva SP councilor Sommaruga said in an interview.

“Involve all stakeholders”

Reducing Hamas to a “simple terrorist military organization” would be a strategic mistake, Sommaruga said. For example, the South African ANC was seen as a terrorist organization before the end of apartheid was negotiated with the ANC. “In a negotiation you have to involve all actors,” he said, especially because Hamas is “very strongly” integrated into Palestinian society.

Sommaruga also emphasized that Switzerland is now in contact with an Israeli government “in which one member recommends the use of the atomic bomb to destroy the Palestinians.” “Is that a reason to stop talking to this government? No,” he concluded. (SDA)
