Editorial about Tiktok and Osama Bin Laden: Not everything was better in the past

“Letter to America”: Osama Bin Laden (1957-2011).

Osama bin Laden has been dead for more than a decade, but today the mastermind of September 11 seems to have come back to life. Reason: An influencer spreads a text on Instagram that the butcher published shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. His ‘Letter to America’ is a rough mix of post-colonial theory, Arab superpower fantasies and anti-Semitic evergreens. In short: Muslims are simply victims everywhere, the West is in a war frenzy and Judaism is still in control in the background.

The fact that ignorant millennials shared this nonsense caused an uproar around the world. The British ‘Guardian’, which had published the text in full, immediately removed it, while ‘Spiegel’ was shocked: ‘Young people are suddenly promoting Al-Qaeda propaganda and justifying violence.’ The episode makes the young generation look bad, including errant climate icon Greta Thunberg in the Palestinian scarf. The image of Generation Z is already in the basement: with a manipulated Linkedin profile, media abstinence and intellect of 170 characters, they enjoy twenty hours a week and want to be a millionaire by the time they are twenty.

The accusations are unfounded. Two or three generations ago, young people glorified China’s “Great Helmsman” Mao, who was blamed for 80 million deaths. Other heroes of the then supposedly highly educated young generation were called Lenin and Trotsky. This Soviet nostalgia later spilled over into pop culture.

Today, the people who cause the biggest problems in schools are often not the students, but their parents. The numerous integration problems also go back to a migration policy that was by no means created by the juniors. Moreover, it is not only young people who spread ideological cheese on Tiktok, but also gray educational philistines and salon fascists in their first, inexperienced assistants of totalitarian powers, in all kinds of publications.

Hope comes more from the next generation. Osama bin Laden is dead.
