The day was supposed to bring in votes, but it ultimately cost him his life: incumbent US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy visited Texas with his wife in November 1963 to increase his chances in the state in the 1964 presidential election. Texas Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie received the presidential couple at Dallas airport on November 22.
The two married couples drove through the city in a dark blue Lincoln with the top down. Thousands of spectators lined the streets. John F. Kennedy was considered a very popular president. Every now and then he stopped the limousine to shake hands.
In the city center, at exactly 12:30 p.m., shots suddenly rang out outside a six-story red brick building, a warehouse for school books. A bullet pierced Kennedy’s neck and exited through his throat. Governor Connally was hit in the back by a bullet. A final shot hit Kennedy in the head, shattering the skull. The president collapsed, covered in blood, on top of his wife Jackie.
The Democratic politician was only 46 years old.
About two hours later, police found a gun in the textbook warehouse and discovered that one of the employees was missing: Lee Harvey Oswald. Just a few hours after the assassination, Oswald was arrested in a movie theater. That same evening he was charged with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. But he was also shot: two days later during a transfer to a new prison at a police station – by cafe owner Jack Ruby.
For this reason, among others, there were numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the attack for decades. Many people did not want to believe that the murder of what was essentially the most powerful man in the world could be the result of one person. And then he was murdered on his doorstep. Was he silenced?
Or was the mafia pulling the strings? Or did it have something to do with the Cuban Missile Crisis? Perhaps it was the Soviets, the military-industrial complex or Kennedy’s successor Lyndon B. Johnson in collaboration with the CIA, organized crime and oil interest groups?
Even fifty years after Kennedy’s death, only 30 percent of those polled said they thought Oswald was solely responsible. The investigative committee of Kennedy’s successor Lyndon B. Johnson initially concluded that Oswald acted alone. However, in 1979, a US House of Representatives investigative committee stated that Kennedy may also have been the victim of a plot. Since then, several experts believe that one or more people impersonated Lee Harvey Oswald in such a plot.
This alleged perpetrator, Lee Harvey Oswald, was born on October 18, 1939 and was therefore 24 years old at the time of the crime. Before the assassination attempt, he was an employee of the US Marines, from which he resigned. And he turned out to have been a defector: in October 1959 he declared at the American embassy in Moscow that he renounced his American nationality.
After his dismissal, the US Federal Police (FBI) contacted Swiss authorities. The FBI had learned from Oswald’s mother that her son planned to study in Switzerland. The woman had received a letter from the school confirming her son’s acceptance. At the request of the FBI, Swiss police revealed in 1960 whether Lee Harvey Oswald was taking courses at the private Albert Schweitzer Institute in Churwalden, GR.
If this were not the case, the police would have to investigate whether someone else had impersonated Lee Harvey Oswald. But an FBI official in Paris eventually sent a note to the FBI director. He quoted Swiss police as saying Oswald never reported to the institute. It is also unlikely that he was registered under a different name. No one resembling the person wanted was seen.
Although Oswald had apparently paid the $25 registration fee as early as June 1959, he apparently never showed up at the institute.
