In the Canton of Aargau, the legal processing of illegally obtained or used Covid-19 loans is becoming more expensive. On Tuesday, the Grand Council unanimously approved an additional loan of 1.5 million francs. Parliament had originally reduced the loan.

Early last year, the Grand Council approved 3.1 million francs so that the judicial authorities could investigate the cases. The government council had requested 4.596 million francs.

The SVP, the Center and the FDP spoke in favor of the reduced amount. Legal processing is also possible with fewer positions. The SP, Greens, GLP and EPP campaigned at the time for the government council’s application and thus for a loan of almost 4.6 million francs.

More than 300 criminal cases

Parliament is now reconsidering because the number of expected Covid-19 fraud cases developed as predicted by the Government Council: the Grand Council approved the additional credit of 1.5 million francs by a vote of 120 to 0. All parties have made it clear that illegal behavior must be investigated and punished.

At the end of March, the Public Prosecution Service had opened a total of 309 criminal cases in connection with the unjustified receipt of Corona aid funds, as stated in the message from the Government Council. The total amount of the violation currently stands at 31.2 million francs.

The illegal receipt of income compensation, compensation for short-time work and Covid-19 loans is of criminal law relevance. This may constitute the crime of fraud, forgery of documents, money laundering and other special criminal offences. (SDA)
