Lisa Mazzone (35) has tears in her eyes and a bouquet of flowers in her hands as she leaves Geneva City Hall on Sunday. The Geneva-Green politician has lost her seat in the Council of States – to Mauro Poggia (64) of the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG).
Mrs Mazzone, what do you say about your deselection?
Lisa Mazzone: First of all, I would like to thank the voters who have placed their trust in me. I have always represented a Geneva committed to future generations. Regardless of whether it concerns ecological issues or issues of equality.
What does the Canton of Geneva lose if you are voted out?
A lot will change. For thirty years, Geneva was represented by at least one woman in the small room. Even a young woman with me. Now the dynamics will be different.
With two men over 60 years old.
Correct.
What does your defeat say about the current political landscape?
I believe that the Greens are currently experiencing a setback after our election victory in 2019. What happened in the cantonal and national elections was repeated today. This should be a wake-up call for feminist concerns and climate protection.
Looking back at the last term, would you do it again in exactly the same way?
I am proud of the work I have done in the Council of States. Together with representatives of the SVP, FDP and Mitte, I was able to develop solutions. And this applies to difficult issues such as renewable energy, the compromise on sex crimes and access to vocational training for undocumented migrants.
Is there anything you will be particularly remembered for in Bundesbern?
The development of the energy strategy, for example. I worked on it together with a Thurgau colleague Jakob Stark from the SVP. We have found a balanced compromise between an ambitious expansion of renewable energy sources and nature conservation. A project that was almost unanimously approved by parliament.
You just said: «C’est fini, pour moi», it’s done. Are you actually withdrawing from politics?
Politics is a means and not an end in itself. A means to express ideas, defend values and projects for future generations. All this can also happen in other ways.
Does that mean specific?
(laughs) I don’t know yet!
