Is this the reason that the next premium shock will follow?: More than a million people want to change health insurer

Health Minister Alain Berset had to increase premiums.

It was a bonus hammer that federal councilor Alain Berset (51) announced at the end of September. The average premium increases by an average of 8.7 percent. Now many people want to switch to a cheap health insurer. This is possible until the end of November.

Marcel Thom, partner at consultancy firm Deloitte, assumes that around 15 percent will switch health insurers. “That would be between 1.3 and 1.4 million people,” he told CH Media newspapers. This year, affordable insurance models have been disproportionately hit by premium increases.

New leader

The higher the premium shock, the higher the switching percentage, says Felix Schneuwly of the online comparison service Comparis.

Health insurer KPT was the most attractively priced health insurer this year and was overwhelmed. Next year they will have to increase prices and lose the top position to Concordia, as the CH Media newspapers write – even though KPT remains on the podium in 12 of the 42 premium regions.

It is unlikely that the Concordia will be as overrun as the KPT; the differences between the individual funds and insurance models are smaller, which means less savings can be made. This also slows down the alternating currents.

There is a risk of a bonus boomerang

Due to the many changes, the real premium premium will probably become smaller. Deloitte partner Thom expects a real premium of 7.1 percent. But there are also negative consequences.

If many people switch, health insurers will receive less premium money than expected. As a result, they can no longer cover the budgeted costs and must compensate them in the coming year. The switching effect alone will result in an increase of 1.2 premium percentage points in 2024. So if no one had changed health insurance a year ago, the premium increase would now be ‘only’ 7.5 percent instead of an average of 8.7 percent. If more than a million people switch cash registers again, the consequences for 2025 are foreseeable. (brother)
