Ammunition subsidies should be abolished: National Council committee rejects shooters

Shooters like Beat Abgottspon (69) will soon have to pay more for ammunition.

Shooters like Beat Abgottspon (69) will have to pay more for ammunition from next year. For cost-saving reasons, the Federal Council wants to subsidize GP11 ammunition – which is fired with the assault rifle 57, carbine or long rifle – less heavily. So instead of 30 cents, the cartridge should cost 60 cents. “There is frustration, misunderstanding, resentment and anger,” Abgottspon – also chairman of the Association of Swiss Veteran Shooters (VSSV) – recently told Blick. “The federal government is endangering Switzerland’s will to defend itself.”

The shooters’ hope lay on the initiative of SVP Council of States Werner Salzmann (61). This required that the federal government not increase the price of ammunition. And the shooters were even allowed to cheer in the small room. The Council of States followed colleague Salzmann with 28 votes in favor and 10 votes and four abstentions. But now the setback.

A wafer-thin no

The National Council Committee wants to continue raising the price of ammunition. The security politicians rejected Salzmann’s proposal by a narrow margin of 11 votes to 10 with 3 abstentions.

“That’s irresponsible!”

The majority believes it is more important to pay higher contributions to shooting clubs – “as proposed by the Federal Council” – so that all shooters can benefit. And probably even more importantly: so that the federal government can save about 1.5 million francs. According to information from Blick, the center was apparently partly against it and the FDP partly abstained. Finally, FDP Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) is on the way to cutbacks.

The 90 assault rifle, which the army currently uses, will use a different ammunition that will not be affected by the price increase, the statement continued. The training effect is therefore retained.

Salzmann’s proposal now goes to the National Council. If he follows the committee and rejects it, the shooters will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future. (bro/dba)
