This year by 4.1 percent: healthcare costs are rising again

Healthcare expenditure in Switzerland is expected to grow by 4.1 percent this year. That is more than the ETH Economic Research Center (KOF) had assumed. The trend is likely to level off, but spending will continue to rise.
The KOF expects growth of 3.6 percent for 2024 and 3.2 percent for 2025, according to the forecast published on Tuesday. Last year, the research center had expected that growth would be 0.5 percent lower in the coming years.

Prevention and administration contribute to this

According to KOF, the areas of prevention, administration and rehabilitation are increasing particularly rapidly. The study predicts below-average cost increases in long-term care or supportive services. The KOF expects 92 billion francs in healthcare expenditure this year, in 2024 this should be 95.3 billion and in 2025 98.4 billion. In 2022 this was still 88.4 billion francs.

Measured by gross domestic product, healthcare expenditure is expected to average around 11.5 percent between 2022 and 2025. In the previous ten years it was 10.9 percent, and from 2002 to 2011 it was less than 10 percent.
