In sports: Another million against abuse

Due to the many reports of abuses, the federal government wants to increase its contribution to the independent reporting center for abuses in sports by 600,000 francs each in 2024 and 2025. In the first year of operation, 2022, more reports were received than expected, and Parliament increased the federal contribution by 360,000 francs.

The independent reporting agency Swiss Sport Integrity also recorded a high and increasing number of reports this year, the Ministry of Defense (VBS) of Viola Amherd (61) announced on Tuesday. It is also responsible for sports.

The office, organized as a foundation, is open to all athletes to report violations and complaints.

Lots of reports from the start

In 2022, the reporting agency expected operating costs of 1.1 million francs, of which the federal government would cover 60 percent and the sports umbrella organization Swiss Olympic would cover 40 percent. However, the high number of reports made an increase necessary even then.

To ensure that the agency can continue to carefully clarify the reports and the duration of the procedure does not increase, Sports Minister Amherd has decided to increase funding for the next two years.

Cultural change takes time

Parliament must still approve the funds during the budget debate in December. As CH Media previously reported, Swiss Olympic has already approved an increase in the association’s contribution by 400,000 francs for each of the two years.

The DDBS assumes that the number of reports will initially increase further. On the one hand, prevention work has started at the sports associations, but cultural change takes time. On the other hand, the agency is well known and enjoys a high degree of credibility, which encourages those involved to come forward.
